A hardy, reliable clematis that flowers freely from late spring to early autumn. It has large, rich blue/purple flowers. The plant's compact habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens and for growing in containers. Planting Can be planted at any time of the year provided the ground is not frozen, but the best times to plant are spring or autumn. We have found it best to wait until danger of frost has passed. Clematis like a well-drained soil, so it is worth adding some coarse grit to improve drainage in the area to be planted. Water the clematis well before planting. If planting by a wall or fence, prepare a hole approx. 30 cm away from the base. If planting close to a tree or shrub, planting on the north side will help shade the clematis roots. If you want your clematis to scramble over a shrub, dig the hole just outside the outer branches. Always dig a large hole, at least twice the width of the pot the plant is growing in and half as deep again. Break up the soil at the bottom and add some well rotted organic matter - compost, leaf mould or decayed manure. A handful of bonemeal can also be forked in. Carefully remove the clematis and its supporting cane from the container and carefully position avoiding damage to any of the plant's stems. Ensure the surface of the root ball is 8cm below the level of the surrounding soil. Fill in the area around the roots with a mixture of equal parts soil and potting compost and firm. Top up the remaining space with soil. Firm again. Place some more of the organic material around the base of the clematis as a mulch, keeping it away from the plant's stems. Water well, particularly if planted in late spring and early summer. If you have chosen a hot, sunny position for the plant, placing stones or bark chippings around the base will shade the roots and help keep them moist and cool. Clematis likes its vines in the sun, its "feet" (roots) in a shady spot.
